Kokol Hill & Kokol Heaven Resort: The Best Sunset Spot Near Kota Kinabalu

29 July 2026·

Kokol Hill sits about an hour from the city centre. Cool air, mist rolling through in the late afternoon, and a view that takes in the whole of Kota Kinabalu, the islands scattered offshore, and the South China Sea beyond.

Locals call it the "second Kundasang." That's generous — it isn't as cold or as dramatic. But it's close, it's easy, and on a clear evening it delivers one of the best sunsets in Sabah.

Where Is Kokol Hill?

Kokol Hill is on Jalan Kokol in Menggatal, within the Kota Kinabalu district. It marks one of the starting points of the Crocker Range, and the resorts near the top sit at roughly 700 metres — over 2,000 feet — above sea level.

From Kota Kinabalu city centre it's about 25 km, or 40 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic and weather. From Kota Kinabalu International Airport, allow around an hour.

That elevation makes a real difference. Daytime temperatures usually sit comfortably in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and evenings get cool enough that you'll want a jacket — a genuine novelty in coastal Borneo.

Kokol Heaven vs Kokol Haven — Two Different Places

This trips people up constantly. There are two similarly named resorts on the same hill.

Kokol Heaven Resort is known for its sky lounge and sunset viewing deck. The feel is relaxed and photogenic — good for couples, groups of friends, or photographers wanting somewhere to settle in for the afternoon. There's also a campsite behind the resort.

Kokol Haven Resort is the largest and longest-established property on Kokol. It has extensive grounds with rooms, dining, gardens and jungle trails, making it better suited to families, honeymooners, and weddings or events.

If your search results show both, that's why. Double-check the full name when you book so you end up where you intended.

What to Do at Kokol Hill

Watch the Sunset from the View Deck

This is the main draw. The viewing decks on Kokol look straight down over Kota Kinabalu, the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, and the open sea — all in a single frame.

The sun drops, the sky shifts through orange and purple, and then the city lights begin flickering on below you. Honestly, that transition is the better half of the show. Most people pack up right after sunset and miss it.

Catch the Morning Sea of Clouds

If you stay overnight, set an alarm. Mornings on Kokol are often thick with mist, and when conditions cooperate the cloud layer settles below the ridge — leaving you looking out over what appears to be an ocean of cloud. Sunrise comes up behind Mount Kinabalu to the east, and several properties are oriented specifically for it.

Glamping and Camping

Kokol has become Kota Kinabalu's glamping hub. There are transparent dome tents built on private decks where you can stargaze from bed, standard campsites that still give you access to resort toilets, restaurants and BBQ areas, and quieter eco-retreats tucked among the trees.

Weekends book out fast. Reserve ahead.

Eat with a View

Several properties have restaurants or lounges facing the valley. Ordering a coffee in the late afternoon and watching the mist come in is, for a lot of people, the entire point of the trip. There are also smaller eateries scattered along Jalan Kokol.

Trails, Gardens and Farms

Short jungle trails, herb gardens and small produce farms sit around the hill. Nice for an easy morning walk before heading back down to the city.

How to Get There

Self-drive or rental car is the most common option. Head toward Menggatal, then climb Jalan Kokol. The road is narrow and winding with plenty of blind corners.

A guided tour is the easiest choice if you'd rather not tackle a mountain road you don't know. Kokol is often paired with nearby stops like the UMS Pink Mosque or Mari Mari Cultural Village.

Ride-hailing usually works fine for getting up. Getting back down is the problem. Phone coverage on the hill is patchy, especially after dark, and drivers are scarce. If you go this route, arrange your return in advance.

Driving note: Check your brakes and tyres before you set off. The climb is steep and twisty, mist can drop suddenly in the afternoon, and visibility goes from clear to nothing in minutes. Take it slow.

Best Time to Visit

TimeWhat You Get
6–8 amSea of clouds, sunrise behind Mt Kinabalu
10 am – 2 pmClearest light, best for trails and photos
3–4 pmIdeal arrival if you're here for sunset
6–7 pmGolden hour, city lights coming on
EveningStars, cold air, camping atmosphere

Seasonally, the drier months from roughly March through September give you better odds of a clear sky. But mountain weather does what it wants. Some days you'll arrive to find the whole hill swallowed in fog and see nothing at all. That's part of the deal.

One-Day Itinerary from the City

TimeActivity
2:00 pmDepart Kota Kinabalu city centre
3:00 pmArrive Kokol Hill, check in
3:30 pmCoffee at a hillside cafe
5:00 pmWalk the grounds, photos
6:15 pmHead to the viewing deck
7:15 pmDinner on the hill
8:30 pmDrive back down

Staying the night? Shift the back half: check in during the afternoon, catch sunset, have dinner, and wake early for the cloud inversion.

What to Bring

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to reach Kokol Hill from Kota Kinabalu?

Around 40 minutes to an hour by car for roughly 25 km, depending on traffic and conditions.

Can I visit Kokol Hill without a car?

Ride-hailing works for the trip up, but return journeys are unreliable because of patchy coverage on the hill. Renting a car or joining a guided tour is the safer bet.

Is Kokol Hill as cold as Kundasang?

No — but it's cool enough to need a jacket at night. That similarity, combined with how much closer it is to the city, is why locals call it the "second Kundasang."

Is it suitable for families with children?

Yes. Several properties have open lawns, playgrounds and gardens. Just keep an eye on kids near the slopes and viewing edges.

Do I need to book in advance?

For weekends and school holidays, definitely. The glamping domes in particular fill up quickly.

Are Kokol Heaven and Kokol Haven the same place?

No. They're separate properties on the same hill with confusingly similar names. Confirm the full name when booking.

Can I camp at Kokol Hill?

Yes. There are several campsites and glamping setups, including areas behind resorts where campers can still use facilities like toilets and restaurants.

Is Kokol Hill Worth It?

If you have a free afternoon in Kota Kinabalu — yes.

Kokol isn't a place packed with things to do. It's a place to slow down. You sit, you drink something warm, you watch a city you were standing in two hours ago turn into a field of lights. For some travellers that won't be enough. For others, it's exactly why they come back.

And if your itinerary doesn't have room for Kundasang or Kinabalu Park, Kokol gives you a taste of highland Sabah an hour from your hotel.
