Honest Review: Hidden Gem Scuba Diving at Bigfin Divers, Kota Belud (Better Than Sipadan?)
Why Choose Bigfin Divers? Most people planning a Sabah travel itinerary immediately think of Semporna or Kundasang. But Bigfin Divers offers something completely different. The whole concept is secluded — and I mean that genuinely. You actually feel like you have an entire private island to yourself.
- Views from the Hilltop to the Sea Getting to the accommodation requires a short hike up. But trust me — the moment you reach the top and see that expanse of blue stretching out in front of you, every drop of sweat is instantly forgotten. The photos I took (see above) are real. Zero heavy editing.
- A Truly Rare Diving Experience The highlight of the whole trip? During one of my dives, I had the incredible luck of spotting a Whale Shark. Absolutely massive, completely calm — and unlike the crowded dive sites elsewhere, there were no swarms of tourist boats ruining the moment. That kind of encounter is rare anywhere in the world.
- Pure Back-to-Nature Vibes No traffic noise. No city chaos. Just the sound of waves and wind. At night, the stars are so clear it almost feels surreal. This place is genuinely perfect for anyone who needs to disconnect and decompress.
Important Info Before You Go
Location: Situated in Mengkabor, Kota Belud. You'll need to take a short boat ride from the jetty. Activities: Beyond scuba diving, you can also do snorkeling, kayaking, or simply unwind on the beach. Tips: Book early — this place fills up fast, especially during school holidays.
Final Thoughts For me, Bigfin Divers is one of those hidden gems in Sabah that hasn't yet been swallowed up by over-tourism or overdevelopment. If you're planning a Sabah trip, I'd strongly recommend staying at least 2 nights here. The extra drive out to Kota Belud is absolutely worth it — especially when the reward is coming face-to-face with a whale shark in waters this pristine. Have you been here before?
